The Payara development offshore Guyana, operated by ExxonMobil, represents a significant deepwater oil project that reached production in late 2023. For piping professionals, it serves as a reference point for the scale and complexity of modern FPSO projects. This article summarizes the verified public facts about Payara and the Prosperity FPSO, and then translates those facts into practical procurement and inspection considerations for engineers and buyers who may reference such projects in their own work.
Project Overview: Payara and the Prosperity FPSO
In September 2020, ExxonMobil announced its final investment decision to proceed with the Payara field development after receiving government approvals. Payara is the third project in the Stabroek Block, following Liza Phase 1 and Liza Phase 2. The project was designed to produce up to 220,000 barrels of oil per day after startup, which was initially expected in 2024. The development targeted an estimated resource base of about 600 million oil-equivalent barrels and included ten drill centers and up to 41 wells—20 production and 21 injection wells.
The Prosperity FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) vessel was selected for the Payara development. In November 2023, ExxonMobil announced that production had started at Payara, ahead of schedule, and that the Prosperity FPSO would add approximately 220,000 barrels per day to Guyana's total production capacity, bringing it to about 620,000 barrels per day. The vessel was expected to reach its initial production rate over the first half of 2024 as new wells came online.
These facts are drawn directly from ExxonMobil's public announcements. For piping professionals, the key takeaway is the sheer scale of such an FPSO project: thousands of piping components, from flanges and fittings to prefabricated spools, are required for topside processing, utility systems, and subsea tiebacks. While Hebei Haihao Group does not claim involvement, we can use this project as a benchmark to discuss procurement best practices for offshore piping.
Piping Systems in FPSO Projects: What Buyers Should Know
FPSO topsides contain extensive piping systems for oil and gas separation, water injection, gas compression, and utility services. These systems operate under high pressures, corrosive environments, and dynamic loading from vessel motions. Therefore, material selection and quality assurance are critical.
Common piping materials in such projects include carbon steel (e.g., ASTM A106 for seamless pipe, ASTM A234 for fittings), stainless steels (e.g., ASTM A312/A358), and corrosion-resistant alloys for sour service. However, the exact material grades and specifications for Payara are not publicly disclosed in the sources we have. Buyers referencing this project should not assume specific material requirements; instead, they should verify with the project's engineering specifications or consult industry standards like ASME B31.3 for process piping.
For prefabricated piping and installation, modularization is often used to reduce offshore hook-up time. Prefabricated spools, pipe racks, and skid-mounted piping are typically fabricated onshore and then transported to the FPSO. This approach requires precise dimensional control and robust quality management. Hebei Haihao Group offers prefabricated piping and installation services that can support such modular projects, as described on our prefabricated piping and installation page.
Procurement Considerations for Offshore Piping Components
When procuring piping components for offshore projects like an FPSO, buyers must consider several factors beyond basic specifications:
- Material traceability: Offshore projects often require full traceability from melt to finished product. Ensure that the manufacturer can provide material test certificates (MTCs) per EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, and that the chemical and mechanical properties meet the specified ASTM or API standards.
- Corrosion protection: FPSO environments are highly corrosive due to saltwater and sour service. Anti-corrosion coatings, such as fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) or three-layer polyethylene, may be required. Hebei Haihao Group provides anti-corrosion and insulation fittings, which are essential for such applications. See our anti-corrosion and insulation fittings page for more details.
- Quality control: Third-party inspection is often mandatory. Buyers should specify inspection and testing requirements, including dimensional checks, hydrostatic testing, and non-destructive testing (NDT) such as radiography or ultrasonic testing. For critical service, additional requirements like PMI (Positive Material Identification) may be imposed.
- Documentation: Complete documentation is essential for offshore projects. This includes MTCs, welding procedures (WPS/PQR), heat treatment charts, and coating certificates. Buyers should review these documents carefully before shipment.
Inspection and Documentation Checklist
For piping components intended for offshore use, the following inspection points are typical:
- Visual inspection: Check for surface defects, weld quality, and dimensional accuracy.
- Dimensional inspection: Verify critical dimensions such as flange thickness, bolt hole alignment, and fitting end diameters against ASME B16.5, B16.9, or other applicable standards.
- Material verification: Perform PMI on stainless steel and alloy components to confirm grade.
- Hydrostatic testing: For flanges and fittings, hydrostatic testing may be required per the applicable standard or project specification.
- Coating inspection: For coated items, verify coating thickness, adhesion, and holiday detection.
Buyers should also require a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) by a third-party agency such as SGS, BV, or TUV. The inspection report should be reviewed before release for shipment.
Common Risks and How to Mitigate Them
- Incorrect material grade: Always cross-check the material grade with the project specification. Do not substitute grades without engineering approval.
- Inadequate traceability: Ensure that all components are marked with heat numbers and that MTCs are provided for each heat.
- Poor coating quality: Offshore environments demand high-performance coatings. Verify that the coating system meets the project's specification and that application is done in a controlled environment.
- Delayed delivery: Offshore projects have tight schedules. Work with suppliers who have a proven track record and can provide realistic lead times. Consider buffer stock for critical items.
RFQ Inputs for Piping Components
When sending an RFQ for piping components for an offshore project, include the following information:
- Project name and location (if relevant)
- Piping class or service (e.g., process, utility, firewater)
- Material grade and standard (e.g., ASTM A105, A234 WPB, A182 F316)
- Size and schedule (e.g., 6" Sch 40)
- Facing and end preparation (e.g., RF, RTJ, beveled ends)
- Coating requirements (e.g., FBE, galvanized)
- Testing and inspection requirements (e.g., hydro, NDT, PMI)
- Documentation requirements (e.g., MTC 3.1, inspection reports)
- Delivery schedule
Providing complete information helps suppliers quote accurately and reduces the risk of misunderstandings.
Conclusion
The Payara development and the Prosperity FPSO are notable examples of large-scale offshore projects. While Hebei Haihao Group does not claim participation, we recognize the importance of such projects as benchmarks for quality and reliability. For piping professionals, the key is to apply rigorous procurement and inspection practices to ensure that components meet the demanding requirements of offshore service. By following the guidelines above, buyers can mitigate risks and ensure successful project execution.
